Halekala-- Comes to Life

Haleakalā, or "house of the sun", rises above sea level 10,023 feet. It's almost unearthly to walk upon the volcanic sand--Martian red and vast in contrast to the clear azure sky. Craggly terrain, mostly barren yet alive in some odd way. Something inside you comes to life here on such a massive volcano early in the morning on a tropical island.
