Zakynthos interior: the village life

As our beautiful villa is on the east coast, we make many drives across the island and into the interior. Mountainous, rural, more olive orchards, old churches, crumbling buildings, hikes in the rain plus super narrow roads through town that seem to go nowhere (but thanks to Google Maps, they do!)

The villages are tiny and charming and quiet. So many stone buildings left in rubble after the 1953 earthquake that destroyed 90% of the structures. We find a reconstructed church--build from 16th-century churches that tumbled in the earthquake. It seems now, that pigeons have come to roost.

How nature can shine joy or sadness, bring change to a place.

Cemeteries are small. Graveside flowers, wine and olive oil in honor of the lost.

It's a mix of old and new and cats and cats and cats. In Giia, we get a fantastic view of the valley below to the east and a delicious lunch at "the best view on the island" tavern. Owner is a bit cranky--doesn't really want to deal with my attempts at ordering in Greek until he accidentally spills a burger on us...and with that, we're friends. He's excited that we're from California as he lived in New York for a while. He's come home to build this tavern with his father, yet he discusses the difficulties of running a business in Greece. Just one of many locals who give us the sad truth of this country's struggling economy and infrastructure.

He serves us a beautiful lunch- thick, sweet Greek wine (all made local...everywhere!) warm dolmades, local Zakynthos olive oil cheese, tiropitas (cheese pies) and a fantastic view below us. Grapes drip off vines off the patio and a swing allows us to find the rhythm of this place--high above the ocean, overlooking the green valley and churches on the middle of an island in the Ionian.

Chapel in the Cave of St. Nicholas. Rain did not permit!

Garakas Beach

Gerakas Beach: lounges, umbrellas, massages on the sand, turtle nests and gorgeous ocean!

Get snorkel ready, set and JUMP in!

Warm, bathwater with pockets of cold. Swim up and down, up and down.

National Marine Park of Zakynthos. Didn't spot a turtle..but this beach was the perfect initiation!

Alykes Beach

It's not hard to relax when you have lounges & umbrellas, eggs & marinara (local Zakynthos dish) and drinks. Add in a little smash ball, friends, family and an azure sea...the perfect recipe for a little piece of paradise.

Soon, in this very spot, we meet Pam-Cakes and Captain George, who both will help us plan a grand adventure to Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves (as soon as a crazy storm passes!)

Cats!

Zakynthos is an island of cats. Tough cats. Skinny cats.  One-eared and one-eyed pirates. A spotted and calico family of cats across the island (probably all related!) At Villa Dione, we were graced with two special ones... George and Sophie. My daughter became their caretaker and the BOSS of these two. They helped us feel like we really did live on an island in Greece (and helped us miss our Lucy girl just a tiny bit less.)

George... a little wiry and raw, but a little desperate to be loved (even though he didn't always know how!)
Sophie pregnant (before the big storm!)
Sophie and George (note that Sophie is NOT pregnant!) We like to think she had 4 kittens and we named them (Storm, Rain, Thunder and Lightning.)
Sometimes, George hung out and graced us with his presence and then they'd both saunter off to their next meal. But morning was not morning without their meows for breakfast. Who knows what they've seen. The dangers they've faced. The adventures they've had. George and Sophie kept it all quiet, but they left a mark on our hearts.

Zakynthos...Villa Dione

A quick flight on EasyJet to Zakynthos. Rent a car. Our wonderful host, Stathis and his daughter, Aliki, guide us to our paradise. Greece is always a crazy place to drive. Hub is at the helm. Narrow roads. Quick curves. Scooter. Quads. Not a lot of rules on the road.

But then we arrive...and all worries float away at Villa Dione.

Villa view from the pool. (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/14778063)

So comfy. So Greek. So many memories made here.

 Pool time all the time!
Of course, every morning started off with a little writing and a cup of tea.
My morning view from the balcony (where many yoga and Uno sessions did occur!)

Of course, a little Greek breakfast, too! (Cherry juice, feta, scrambled eggs with tomato and oregano and the sweetest green melon ever. )

Inhale the sweet Night Blooming Jasmine. Oleander pink and red. Olive orchards surround us. Vines sway. Jasmine blossoms bob in the pool. Bees rest and drink. Swallows circle. Cats meow. Swallowtails flutter all with the Ionian Sea in the distance. The sun sets late-- around 9:00pm and soon the bats dive toward the water. Silent and graceful. Our resident Scops owl calls out into the night. dyoo dyoo

Such peace here. Grace. Beauty. Fortune that we make ourselves.

I am grateful.

Which we ascribe to Heaven."--Shakespeare
